Is Amazon Audible Worth the Money?

audibleDid you know that the average daily commute is 25 minutes one way? Most people will spend that time listening to music or cursing the universe for giving them such a crappy job. Sadly, they’re wasting plenty of valuable time.

25 minutes one way per day, translates to 4 hours a week or 16 hours per month! 16 hours is a ton of time; too much time to waste.

I’m not telling you to quit your job to work at home. Rather, make the most of the time you do spend commuting, or whatever other chores or errands you do throughout your week.

Perhaps the best way for the average person to spend this time is to listen to an audiobook. Instead of listening to music or dumbing themselves down with a talk show like Howard Stern, they can spend time learning more about the world.

Maybe you want to start a business. Why not listen to an audiobook about entrepreneurship or leadership?

Audiobooks come in a variety of genres, so you don’t have to limit yourself. Listen to whatever your heart desires!

Personally, I greatly value my time and it would be hard for me to waste almost 200 hours a year!

If you do the math, you could listen to about 24 books each year just during your commute. And though listening to books alone won’t make a genius or rich, it will definitely enhance the quality of your life. That’s why I started this site.

Weighing the Costs of Audiobooks

I used to work at a Barnes & Noble. As rare as it was for people to buy music and DVD’s there, buying an audiobook was even more of an anomaly.

There are three main reasons for this:

  • Most people prefer to read, not listen to, books
  • They’re pricey
  • The selection is often limited

The first reason is mostly personal preference. I prefer to read books, but there are times when I prefer to listen to audiobooks.

The section option is the biggest factor. Most audiobooks cost around $35-40. Some even cost as much as $60!

Most people are going to be hard-pressed to spend $60 on a book. Especially when you take into consideration the price of a regular book or eBook (i.e. $10-$30). Whereas the cost of an Audible membership is $14.95 per month.

The third factor is also not ideal. Books that aren’t wildly popular will not be found in audiobook form because they aren’t profitable.

Is Amazon Audible Worth the Money For You?

In terms of the Audible program, you only have access to one audiobook per month; that’s fine. Maybe you don’t want to give up that morning talk show. So, every morning you’ll listen to the talk show and in the afternoon you’ll listen to your audiobook. That still gives you time to listen to at least one book per month.

And when you take into consideration that you’re only paying half the price for an eBook than you would at a retailer like Barnes & Noble, it becomes a no-brainer.

The one thing you must keep in mind though is that you want to get your money’s worth, and don’t want to stop listening to audiobooks altogether. If you can’t make a promise to yourself to listen to audiobooks, then I can’t recommend this program for you.

Maybe you’re still on the fence about it. If so, why not try a free trial from Audible? Check out their selection, download a book and see how you like it.

If you love it, then definitely sign up. If not, at least you can say you gave it a try.

That said, I hope you take this information into consideration. Ultimately, whether it’s audiobook or a print version, books are definitely going to improve the quality of your life.
